The 3.0L N55 straight-six engine develops a maximum output of 245 kW (333 hp). As a track car aimed at amateur drivers, the car features driver aids, such as anti lock brakes, traction control and dynamic stability control.

BMW M2 Coupé (F87)

In October 2015, BMW unveiled the new flagship 2 Series, dubbed the M2. It is an indirect successor to the 1 Series M Coupé. The M2 Coupé began production at the end of 2015, and went on sale in the United Kingdom during April 2016.

With the 6-speed manual gearbox, the M2 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds, or 4.3 seconds if equipped with the 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but the limiter can be raised to 270 km/h (168 mph) as an option.

The US version of the M2 was unveiled in 2016 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The M2 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0 litre BMW N55B30 straight-six engine producing 272 kW (370 PS; 365 hp) at 6,500 rpm and having a redline of 7,000 rpm. Torque is listed at 465 N?m (343 lb?ft) between 1,400-5,560 rpm, while an overboost function can increase torque to 500 N?m (369 lb?ft) between 1,450-4,750 rpm. The engine utilises a twin scroll turbocharger.

M2 Competition

In April 2018, BMW released the Competition package for the M2 Coupé as a replacement for the standard M2 Coupé. BMW replaced the N55B30T0 with a twin scroll turbocharger used in the M2 with the S55B30T0 single scroll twin-turbocharged engine with a carbon fibre strut brace as used in the F80 M3. Power and torque figures are increased to 302 kW (411 PS; 405 hp) between 5,250-7,000 rpm and 550 N?m (406 lb?ft) between 2,350-5,230 rpm respectively. The car is available with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the 7-speed M DCT gearbox is available as an option. 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) acceleration time is improved and is now achieved at 4.4 seconds (4.2 seconds with the 7-speed M DCT gearbox). Exterior changes include new 19-inch lightweight Y-spoke alloy wheels, bigger brake discs with grey M-sport brake callipers, M-sport wing mirrors from the F80 M3, new front bumper with gloss black kidney grille for improved cooling, new two-pass exhaust system with electronically controlled flaps for improved emissions, new adaptive head lamps and two new exterior colours namely Sunset Orange Metallic and Hockenheim Silver Metallic respectively. Top speed stands at 155 mph (249 km/h) or 174 mph (280 km/h) with the optional M-driver's package. The interior also receives minor modifications that include a carbon fibre trim, a new steering wheel from the F80 M3 with "M1" and "M2" driving mode selector buttons, door sills with "M2 Competition" badging and M-sport seats with "M2" badging. Weight has also been increased as compared to the standard M2 Coupé and now stands at 1,550 kg (3,417 lb) courtesy of the new engine and cooling system. The M2 competition is priced at US$58,900 with deliveries scheduled to begin in July 2018.
